Walking around the garden this morning, I was surprised by how many of the rose bushes still had supple new leaves after enduring sub-zero temperatures with no protection other than the little bit of mulch we keep around the bud unions. Many of the freeze dried roses are not completely dried out, and still display some very nice rose vascularity. However, some of the cones from the echinaceas are very dry and losing their seeds, giving them a punkish, mohawk look.
The cats enjoy wandering around the garden with us and they were in good kitty form this morning. Mama Manx has recently decided she wanted to go outside beyond the catio. She joined us on the garden tour and got slapped at by Guildenstern when she walked in front of a bench he was lounging on. Diné was scrounging for the little bits of catnip she could find, while Guildenstern, when not lying on the bench slapping at the other kitties, walked around in front of me posing for the camera.
While the temperature was barely above freezing during our garden tour, the air felt fresh and crisp, but not very cold. The light was harsh under the full winter sun that crawled lazily across the southern sky, making it feel warmer than it really was, tricking the roses into putting out new leaves.
The cats look so happy to be out in the sun.
ReplyDeleteYesterday felt so much warmer than it actually was, because of the full sun and no wind. I got a lot of errands done that I had been putting off.
I think today may be the same. Big decision - to work in the house or work in the yard today? They both need it. :-(
I love the photo of the Echinacea pod.
